Taboola vs Outbrain: which native network actually performs?
We spent ₹40L across both networks over 6 months for the same client. Here's the honest comparison — including which verticals each one wins, and what nobody on either platform's sales team will tell you.
Native advertising is one of the most underrated channels in 2026. CPMs are still 60-80% cheaper than Google or Meta, the inventory is on premium publishers (Times of India, NDTV, BBC, etc.), and the buyer intent — while colder than Google — is way warmer than display.
The two big networks in this space are Taboola and Outbrain. They look similar on the surface. They're not. Here's the breakdown after running parallel campaigns for 6 months.
The setup
Same client (a B2B finance product). Same offer. Same landing page. Same daily budget split 50/50. We ran identical creatives across both networks for the first 90 days, then optimised separately for the next 90.
The headline numbers
| Metric | Taboola | Outbrain |
|---|---|---|
| Total spend | ₹20.2L | ₹19.8L |
| Avg. CPC | ₹6.40 | ₹8.20 |
| CTR | 0.42% | 0.31% |
| Conv. rate (lead) | 2.1% | 3.8% |
| Cost per lead | ₹305 | ₹216 |
| Lead-to-customer | 3.2% | 5.1% |
On the surface, Taboola wins on volume and CPC. But Outbrain wins on the metrics that actually matter — conversion rate, cost per lead, and lead quality. For our client, Outbrain delivered a 32% lower cost-per-customer despite the higher CPC.
Where Taboola wins
Top-of-funnel discovery
Taboola's reach in India is bigger. If you're trying to drive massive impressions for brand awareness or content amplification (think publication launches, video views, social proof building), Taboola's volume is hard to beat.
Ecommerce + impulse buys
Lower-ticket ecom (₹500-3,000 products), trending products, anything where the user's decision can happen in one session — Taboola wins. The audience matches more impulse-buyer behaviour.
Easier campaign setup
Taboola's UI is more polished. Reporting is faster. The auto-bid algorithms ramp up quicker. For teams new to native, the lower learning curve matters.
Where Outbrain wins
Higher-intent verticals
B2B, finance, insurance, healthcare, education — anywhere the buyer needs to think and research — Outbrain consistently delivered better-quality clicks. We saw the same pattern across 4 different B2B clients.
Premium publisher inventory
Outbrain's exclusive partnerships skew more toward business publications and quality news (CNN, Wall Street Journal, Mint in India). If your buyer reads serious content, your ad shows up next to it.
Cleaner traffic
Bot traffic and arbitrage publishers exist on both networks, but Outbrain has historically been more aggressive about pruning. Our session quality (time on page, bounce rate) was consistently better.
The advertorial difference
This is where most people screw up native ads. You can't send native traffic directly to a sales page. The conversion path needs to be:
Native click → advertorial article → soft call to action → landing page → conversion.
The advertorial pre-sells. It tells a story, builds context, addresses objections, then hands off to your offer. Skip this and your CR will be 1/5th of what it should be.
Both networks let you do this — but Outbrain's algorithm, in our testing, picks up on advertorial-to-LP funnels faster and starts optimising for downstream conversion sooner.
The verdict
Pick Taboola if you're:
- Running ecommerce, especially impulse-buy products
- Optimising for raw traffic / brand impressions
- New to native and want easier ramp-up
- Comfortable with looser publisher quality
Pick Outbrain if you're:
- In B2B, finance, insurance, healthcare, education
- Optimising for lead quality over volume
- Need premium publisher placements
- Have a longer sales cycle
Pick both if you're scaling
Once you're spending ₹3L+/month on native, run both. The audiences overlap less than you'd think. Most of our scaled clients run 60% Outbrain / 40% Taboola — keeping each on the campaign types they're best at.
The biggest lesson
Native ads succeed or fail almost entirely based on three things: headline + thumbnail + advertorial. The platform you pick matters less than how well you execute these three. Brands that obsess over these out-perform brands that just throw budget at native.
Both Taboola and Outbrain can be incredibly profitable. Both can also burn through budget with nothing to show. The platform isn't the variable. The execution is.
